Information for Students

Student Resources

Thank you for your interest in a placement with our clinic. At CMOH we are a teaching practice and are committed to supporting placements for clinical learners. We feel it is important to welcome students into our practice in order to contribute to the ongoing growth of the midwifery profession and develop working relationships with other health care providers. We are affiliated with both the Ontario Midwifery Education Program and the McMaster University Department of Family Medicine. Please continue reading in order to learn about our practice and whether we might be a good fit for you.

About Our Practice

We are a busy urban practice located in downtown Hamilton, with a catchment area that includes the City of Hamilton and surrounding areas. In addition to our main clinic location, we are partnered with a number of community health centres and community-based services and often conduct clinic for clients at these locations. A number of our midwives participate in outreach activities in order to provide accessible midwifery care to new immigrants, pregnant youth, and priority populations.

CMOH is a full-scope midwifery practice with admitting privileges at both our obstetrical hospitals: McMaster University Medical Centre (Hamilton Health Sciences) and St Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton. We maintain care for clients choosing epidural pain medication in labour, and requiring oxytocin to either induce or augment established labour. Our planned home birth and hospital birth rate is similar to the provincial midwifery average of 20% and 80% respectively.

About Our Midwives

Our team of midwives are dedicated to supporting the growth of the midwifery profession. In addition to precepting students in clinical placements, a large number of our midwives are involved with the Midwifery Education Program (MEP) as sessional instructors, tutors, researchers, and faculty. To learn more about our individual midwives and their affiliations with the MEP, please check out their bios in the Our Midwives section.

About Our Student Placements

At CMOH, we offer clinical placements for students in the MEP at all levels. We typically take between 3-5 students a year, with a focus on providing full-scope senior student placement opportunities. We are proud to offer clinical placements that provide a variety of learning opportunities for students including outreach activities, hospital and community committee work, and inter-professional educational events.

A few things you should know about students placements at CMOH:

  • our midwives work a mix of primary and shared call models
  • off call time for students is arranged as per the MEP guidelines
  • we expect students to live within 30 minutes response time to both of our hospitals

About Placements for Other Clinical Learners

In addition to providing clinical placements for midwifery students, we also work with obstetric residents, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, physician assistants, and various co-op programs to support observational and clinical opportunities within the midwifery scope of practice. We welcome all clinical learners to contact us directly in order to speak to one of our Educational Coordinators about placement opportunities and requirements.
